Tech Tips

Upgrades

We hear the word "upgrade" often these days. People want to upgrade to a better car, a bigger house, or a higher pay scale. Computer technicians use the word to refer to changes to your computer system. So what is an upgrade, and how can it better your system?

Most technology companies structure their computers much like automobile companies—with a base model and available upgrades. If you know what you need when you purchase your system, you can request upgrades for your new system. If, however, you purchase a base model system and find that the system isn't serving your needs, you can purchase upgrades from a computer center and install them yourself or have them installed by a computer technician.

Various system components, both software and hardware, can be upgraded. For example, one common hardware upgrade is to add memory. Your system comes with a set amount of Random Access Memory, or RAM. This memory is what allows your computer to keep track of the functions it is performing. If you are using your computer heavily, your RAM may become overloaded, which slows down your system. Adding RAM can speed up your system. Another common upgrade is a video card upgrade. The video card is what allows you to see your computer's functions on your monitor. If you play games with complex graphics, your "base model" memory card may not be able to keep up, and an upgrade may be advised.

upgradesA variety of other hardware components may be upgraded, including sound cards and processors. You can also upgrade from one component to a different component. For example, if your base model computer came with a CD-Rom drive, you can upgrade to a DVD burner. If your system is not working for you, don't feel stuck. Changes are easy and often inexpensive. When considering a new system, be sure to tell your salesperson exactly how you plan to use the computer. An experienced computer technician will be able to build a system for you based on your specific requirements.

In addition to hardware upgrades, you may wish to upgrade your software. Software upgrades can be more expensive than hardware upgrades, but are often necessary for your computer to continue to function optimally. For example, many new programs will not run on Windows 98, so an upgrade to Windows XP is required. Anti-virus programs usually require yearly upgrades to protect your system from attack. Most financial, office, and gaming software programs are updated regularly; it is up to you to decide whether or not you need or want the upgrade.

Just as repairing a car eventually becomes less cost-effective than buying a new one, computer systems are not meant to be upgraded indefinitely. An experienced computer technician can help you to decide whether an upgrade is advisable, or whether a new system would better serve your needs. The good news is, in today's market, you can buy or build a system which is uniquely suited to your computing needs.
